Two quotations for the same bag can differ by a wide margin once delivery terms are compared. FOB and DDP are the two terms most often used in dog waste bag orders, and they move very different costs between buyer and seller. This guide explains what each term covers, how to compare landed cost, and which term fits which order.

What FOB means in practice

FOB means the seller delivers the goods to the named port and clears export. From that point the buyer pays ocean or air freight, insurance, destination charges, import duty and delivery to the warehouse. FOB quotes are transparent and comparable, but they require the buyer to have a freight forwarder and to understand destination charges.

What DDP includes

DDP means the seller arranges and pays freight, insurance, export and import clearance, duty and final delivery. The buyer receives a single price to the door. It is convenient for first orders and for buyers without a forwarder, but the quote is only as reliable as the seller's freight and duty assumptions. Ask for the destination, the HS code used and the validity period.

Comparing landed cost

Build the comparison on landed cost per bag, not on the quoted unit price. Add freight, insurance, duty, destination charges, and any storage or re-delivery costs. Divide by the number of bags, not by cartons, and include packaging weight in the freight calculation. A DDP quote that looks higher can be cheaper once FOB charges are added.

When FOB makes sense

FOB suits repeat buyers with an established forwarder, consolidated shipments, and buyers who can handle duty themselves. It also gives more control over the freight schedule and carrier. If you ship several suppliers together, FOB usually wins on cost.

When DDP makes sense

DDP suits first orders, small volumes, sample-to-production transitions and buyers who do not want to manage customs. It also simplifies budgeting because the delivered cost is fixed in the quotation. Confirm who is the importer of record and what happens if duty is reassessed.

What to ask for in a quote

Ask for the Incoterm, the named port or door, the HS code, the freight basis by weight or volume, the duty assumption and the quote validity. For DDP, ask whether duty is included at the destination rate and who handles clearance. For FOB, ask for the port of loading and the estimated transit time.
